Even though marijuana is illegal in the United States, our culture has embraced it on a mainstream level. Each year countless movies are produced that depict pot-smoking in either a comedic or cool way, and in the high-stress society that is America; it’s no wonder we seek to get our eyes glazed in front of a stony movie. These are ten well-loved films of the genre:
#1 Heavy Metal: 1981
A cult classic, and maybe the weirdest film of our list, Heavy Metal is a series of animated sci-fi and fantasy featurettes backed by an amazing classic rock soundtrack. Several different animation studios were involved in making Heavy Metal, and this gives each story its own style and mood. Heavy Metal is a highly imaginative classic guaranteed to rock your brain and pleasure your eyes.
#2 Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas: 1998
In Fear and Loathing, Hunter S. Thompson’s dark vision of the Nixon era comes to life starring Johnny Depp and Benicio Del Toro. The plot is very loose, and usually takes a back seat to the characters’ outrageous behavior, and frantic reactions to both real, and imagined threats. It’s dark comedy not intended for the easily offended.
#3 Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle: 2004
Perhaps the smartest of the stoner films, Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle spurred a series of sequels and knock-offs. The plot is contained in the title: the two friends spend the entire movie on a quest for those greasy sliders, but discover many challenges along the way. This film also gave birth to Neal Patrick Harris’s comeback persona.
#4 Super High Me: 2007
A twisted spin-off of the popular Super Size Me, this film documents comedian Steve Benson as he challenges himself to smoke marijuana several times every day for 30 days. Benson’s documentary, aimed to dispel the myths about pot, includes interviews with cannabis experts, and examinations with a medical doctor.
#5 Half Baked: 1998
A movie that everyone will like, Half Baked stars legendary comedians from the 90’s in the prime of their careers. The plot kicks off with Kenny (Harland Williams) accidentally killing a police horse and being sent to jail. His gang of friends(Dave Chappelle, Jim Breuer, Guillermo Díaz) begin selling stolen medical marijuana in order to get him out. The movie also has many hilarious cameo appearances by Snoop Dogg, Tommy Chong, Bob Saget, etc…
#6 Reefer Madness: 1936
Not intended as a comedy, this 30’s PSA is altogether comical from today’s viewpoint. Pot and Jazz music are portrayed as the leading causes of mental illness and murder.
#7 Pineapple Express: 2008
Pineapple Express is not only a stoner movie, but also an action movie. It mixes elements of classic high-humor with several comedic action sequences. James Franco makes a surprising, and successful debut as a comedic actor alongside Seth Rogen. The movie tells the tale of a process server and his pot dealer, who become intertwined with dangerous drug lords and are forced to fight for their lives.
#8 The Big Lebowski: 1998
A modern classic, The Big Lebowski has developed a well deserved cult following. It includes unforgettable characters like: “The Dude”, an avid bowler and white-russian drinker, played by Jeff Bridges; a high-strung, divorced vietnam vet named Walter Sobchak; and the outspoken Donny as portrayed by Steve Buscemi. The movie centers around the dude having his rug stolen by thugs, and his unrelenting quest to get it back.
#9 Being John Malkovich: 1999
Written by the prolific Charlie Kaufman, this film is not a drug-centered story, but when you feature a secret portal that puts you inside of John Malkovich’s head; not many people would understand it sober. Co-starring John Cusack, and Cameron Diaz the movie is full of strange twists and trippy scenarios.
#10 What the Bleep Do We Know!?: 2004
Not exactly a film to base your understanding of the universe on (it delves into mysticism on many an occasion), What the Bleep do We know is one of those documentaries that seems to blow your mind in a different way every time. You’re sure to feel like you’ve reached enlightenment if you watch this movie enough times while stoned.
